Final Cut Camera 2.0: Apple's Pro Video App Gets a Major Upgrade

Apple has once again blurred the line between smartphone and professional video camera with the announcement of Final Cut Camera 2.0. This isn’t just a minor update; it’s a significant leap forward, bringing a suite of high-end filmmaking features to the iPhone, particularly the new iPhone 17 Pro lineup.

The Pro Features You’ve Been Waiting For

Final Cut Camera has always been a powerful tool for creators, but version 2.0 elevates it to a whole new level. The most anticipated additions are features typically found on dedicated cinema cameras:

  • ProRes RAW: This is the big one. Final Cut Camera 2.0 makes the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max the first smartphones capable of capturing video in ProRes RAW. This format records raw, unprocessed data directly from the camera’s sensor, giving you unparalleled flexibility in post-production for color grading, exposure adjustments, and more, all with the efficiency and performance of Apple’s ProRes codec.
  • Genlock Support: For multi-camera shoots, genlock is a game-changer. This feature allows you to precisely synchronize the iPhone 17 Pro’s frame timing with other cameras, ensuring every frame is perfectly aligned. This eliminates the need for hours of manual syncing in the editing bay, streamlining professional workflows.
  • Open Gate Recording: Final Cut Camera 2.0 introduces open gate recording, which uses the entire camera sensor to capture a wider field of view at resolutions beyond 4K. This gives editors ultimate creative freedom to reframe shots, stabilize footage, and choose their final aspect ratio in post without sacrificing quality.

More Than Just RAW

Beyond the headline features, Final Cut Camera 2.0 adds a number of other enhancements that will delight filmmakers and content creators:

  • Apple Log 2: The new Apple Log 2 format on the iPhone 17 Pro allows for an even wider color gamut, offering greater dynamic range and a flatter image profile perfect for advanced color grading.
  • Timecode: For complex productions, timecode is essential. Final Cut Camera 2.0 now offers multiple timecode options, including Time of Day, Record Run, and external timecode, for precise identification of every clip.
  • Enhanced Center Stage: The new Center Stage front camera on the iPhone 17 family now has new manual controls in Final Cut Camera, letting you capture horizontal or vertical video without physically rotating your phone.
  • Telephoto ProRes: The app also adds support for the new 200mm telephoto camera on the iPhone 17 Pro, allowing you to capture ProRes video at up to 4K60 fps.

Seamless Workflow Integration

Final Cut Camera 2.0 isn’t just a standalone app; it’s designed to be a part of a larger, integrated ecosystem. The new features are tightly integrated with upcoming updates to Final Cut Pro on both Mac and iPad, which will provide new tools for editing iPhone ProRes RAW footage. The Live Multicam feature with Final Cut Pro for iPad also gets a boost, making it easier than ever to manage multi-camera shoots on the go.

Availability

Final Cut Camera 2.0 will be available as a free download from the App Store later in September 2025. While the app is compatible with iPhone Xs and newer running iOS 18.6 or later, features like ProRes RAW and genlock require the latest iPhone 17 Pro models.

Apple’s commitment to professional creators is clearer than ever. With Final Cut Camera 2.0, the iPhone is more than just a camera you carry in your pocket; it’s a professional-grade production tool that can stand alongside much more expensive equipment.
