Maranello has once again blended its glorious past with a cutting-edge future. The curtains have been pulled back on the Ferrari SC40, the latest one-off creation to emerge from the ultra-exclusive Special Projects division. This isn’t just a new custom supercar; it is a meticulously crafted, 819-horsepower hybrid love letter to arguably the greatest supercar of all time: the legendary F40.
The Foundation: Modern Hybrid Power
The Ferrari SC40 is built upon the architecture and formidable powertrain of the 296 GTB. While the purists might raise an eyebrow at a V6 replacing the F40’s ferocious twin-turbo V8, there’s no arguing with the numbers.
The SC40 utilizes the 296’s plug-in hybrid system, which pairs a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 with an electric motor. The resulting power output is a staggering 819 horsepower (830 CV). For comparison, the original F40 produced 478 horsepower. The SC40’s performance is nothing short of modern hyper car territory, boasting a 0-62 mph time of just 2.9 seconds and a top speed in excess of 205mph.
This fusion of retro design with hybrid technology marks a pivotal moment, showing how Ferrari is evolving its most sacred legacy cars into the electrified future.

Design: A Modern Interpretation of a Timeless Classic
The SC40’s design, overseen by the Ferrari Styling Centre, is where the real homage takes place. The goal was to capture the spirit of the 1987 icon without creating a literal copy, and the result is a triumph of geometric and muscular proportions:
- The Wing: The most unmistakable nod is the fixed, high-level rear wing. Much like the F40, it extends vertically from the rear quarter panels, and proudly features the “SC40” script engraved in relief on its upright.
- Aero-Ducts Reimagined: The original F40 was famous for its raw, functional cooling ducts. The SC40 reinterprets these with prominent, angular intercooler air intakes on the side, a clear, modern nod to the classic NACA ducts.
- The Rear Fascia: The exposed engine is a core part of the F40’s character. The SC40 maintains this tradition with an open-mesh rear fascia and smoked Lexan® louvres over the engine cover, allowing a tantalizing glimpse of the hybrid V6 beneath.
- Unique Hue: Moving away from traditional Rosso Corsa, the SC40 is finished in a unique shade called Bianco SC40—a bespoke pearly white that accentuates its sharp lines and muscular volumes.
The Interior: Carbon-Kevlar and Nostalgia
Inside, the commitment to the F40 is evident through the materials. The F40 was a pioneer in using composite materials for lightness, and the SC40 recalls this with extensive use of redeveloped Carbon-Kevlar in the footwells, behind the seats, and on the dashboard inserts.
The seats themselves are upholstered in a combination of Charcoal Alcantara® and striking red Jacquard technical fabric, recalling the raw, motorsports-focused interiors of the late-80s hypercar era.
The Ultimate Expression of Exclusivity
Like all creations from the Special Projects programme, the SC40 is a true one-of-one, commissioned by a single, exclusive client who worked closely with the Maranello design team over a two-year period. While its price remains undisclosed, its exclusivity ensures it sits among the most prized cars ever to wear the Prancing Horse badge.
The Ferrari SC40 is more than a tribute; it is a declaration that the company’s greatest legends can—and must—embrace the future. By perfectly fusing the raw, angular aesthetics of its most celebrated icon with the peak of modern hybrid performance, the SC40 has carved out its own unique place in the Ferrari dynasty.
