Yesterday, Google officially announced that Gmail is “entering the Gemini era” with a massive overhaul powered by its new Gemini 3 model. Marking the biggest change to the platform in 20 years, these updates shift Gmail from a static message repository into a proactive personal assistant.
Gmail’s new AI Inbox is like having a personalized briefing, highlighting to-dos and catching you up on what matters. In short, AI upgrades that had been restricted to paid accounts will now be free. AI Overviews, Help Me Write and Suggested Replies are rolling out to all. Google says “as always, you’re in control, and can choose to turn these new @Gmail features on or off.”
The most visual change is the AI Inbox, a new interface designed to cut through the noise of hundreds of daily emails. Instead of a simple chronological list, the AI Inbox creates a personalized briefing dashboard divided into two key sections:
- Suggested To-Dos: Gemini identifies high-priority emails that require action—like a bill due tomorrow or a follow-up for a doctor’s appointment—and elevates them to the top.
- Topics to Catch Up On: The AI groups less urgent emails into themes (e.g., “Trip to Japan” or “Home Renovation”) so you can review relevant updates all at once.
AI Inbox is currently rolling out to Trusted Testers in the U.S. first, with a wider global launch planned for later in 2026.
