Verizon announced today that it has started working on developing its 6G technology and is taking the lead in shaping the future of wireless communication. To begin working on this new network, Verizon has also partnered with some of the big OEMs in tech, including Sony Ericsson, Samsung, and Nokia, along with device and chipset innovators Meta and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.
In its press release, the company stated that this forum’s aim is to look for the network’s potential uses, and with the help of the above companies, Verizon would be able to create foundational technologies that align with global needs.
The newly announced Verizon 6G Labs, starting in Los Angeles, will be the proving grounds for this technology. These labs will serve as hubs for collaborative research, prototyping, and real-world testing, allowing partners to refine 6G technologies in a practical environment.
What does this mean for consumers and businesses? While a full 6G rollout is still years away—likely around 2030—the work being done now is laying the foundation for a truly transformative era. We’re talking about a world where real-time AI is ubiquitous, where immersive augmented and virtual reality experiences are lag-free, and where smart cities, autonomous vehicles, and remote medical procedures operate with near-zero latency.
Verizon’s deep dive into 6G is a clear statement of intent. The company, which was among the first to launch 5G, is now taking a proactive role in shaping the next chapter of wireless communication, ensuring that when the 6G era arrives, it’s not just a faster network, but a smarter, more connected, and more intelligent world.
