Introducing ChatGPT Atlas: A New Frontier in Knowledge and AI

The way we use the internet is about to fundamentally change. For decades, the browser has been a fixed window, requiring us to navigate, search, and manage information across countless tabs. That era is over.

Today, OpenAI is thrilled to introduce ChatGPT Atlas—a new browser built from the ground up to integrate conversational AI seamlessly into your digital life. Atlas is not just a tool for viewing the web; it is a collaborative, context-aware assistant that works on the page, with you, to get things done faster than ever before.

Atlas is designed around the philosophy that the web should be an interactive, editable workspace, not just a set of static pages. Here’s how we’ve made that a reality:

1. ChatGPT, Anywhere on the Web (The Sidebar)

No more copying text or switching tabs to ask a question. With a single click, the ChatGPT sidebar appears alongside any webpage. Atlas is context-aware, meaning it “sees” the page you are viewing and can instantly:

  • Summarize a 10,000-word research paper.
  • Analyze product reviews on a shopping site and compare key features.
  • Debug a block of code on GitHub.
  • Refine the tone of an email you’re drafting in a web app.

2. Cursor Collaboration: AI Editing in Real-Time

We’ve introduced Cursor Chat, a feature that turns your cursor into a writing partner. Simply highlight any text—in an email, a Google Doc, or a social media draft—and the AI will pop up with suggestions. Ask it to:

  • “Make this sound more professional.”
  • “Expand on this idea in two paragraphs.”
  • “Translate this sentence into French.”

The AI edits the text inline, eliminating the friction of copy-paste.

3. True Memory: The Browser That Learns You

Traditional browsers forget everything the moment you close the tab. Atlas includes optional Browser Memories, allowing ChatGPT to recall key details from the sites you visit. This creates a deeply personalized experience:

  • Ask, “Find all the job postings I looked at last week and summarize the common salary range.”
  • It remembers your preferences: “Re-open the running shoes I almost bought yesterday but in a different color.”

Privacy is paramount: You have full control to view, archive, or instantly clear your browser memories at any time.

4. Agent Mode: Taking Action for You (Plus, Pro, and Business)

This is where the magic truly begins. In Agent Mode, ChatGPT moves from being an assistant to an active agent. It can execute multi-step tasks across the web on your behalf, such as:

  • Booking a trip: “Find and book a 3-day flight and hotel package for two in Paris next month.”
  • Managing shopping: “Research this recipe, find all the ingredients on InstantCart, and fill my shopping basket.”
  • Complex research: “Compile a list of all public statements a company has made on sustainability in the last year.”

You always maintain oversight. The Agent is trained to ask for confirmation before taking important actions, and you can pause, interrupt, or take over control instantly.

Download ChatGPT Atlas, now available on macOS, with Windows, iOS, and Android coming soon.
