Audi Reveals First Look at Formula 1 Car Design

The countdown to the 2026 Formula 1 season officially gained speed this week as Audi lifted the curtain on its design concept—the R26 Concept—providing the first visual glimpse of the car that will carry the iconic Four Rings onto the grid.

More than just a livery reveal, this moment marks a significant statement of intent from the German powerhouse. By stepping into F1 as a full works team (acquiring the Swiss-based Sauber team), Audi is leveraging the pinnacle of motorsport to pioneer its new, unified brand identity across both the racetrack and its road cars.

The R26 Concept showcases a livery that is unmistakably Audi, blending heritage with a sharp, futuristic aesthetic. The design is built around three core tones, arranged in precise geometric color blocks that emphasize the car’s aerodynamic form:

  • Titanium: A silky, gunmetal-like gray that covers much of the car, evoking the polished aluminum of the historic Auto Union “Silver Arrows.”
  • Carbon Black: The dark shade of raw, exposed carbon fiber, used strategically on the engine cover and rear wing, signifying the technical nature of the machine.
  • Audi Red (Lava Red): A newly introduced, richer racing red that provides a vibrant contrast and is used for key accents, including the Audi rings on the nosecone—a deliberate design choice that is set to become part of the wider brand identity.

According to Audi’s design team, the goal was to move away from common flowing stripes, instead using the geometric color blocks to create an aesthetic that “screams performance engineering” and will be instantly recognizable on television.

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner has been clear about the brand’s ambition. They are not entering F1 simply to participate; they are entering to win.

“We are not entering Formula 1 just to be there. We want to win,” said Döllner. “By 2030, we want to fight for the World Championship title.”

With the acquisition of Sauber complete, the team is working with a blend of new and established talent, including veteran driver Nico Hülkenberg and promising rookie Gabriel Bortoleto set to form the 2026 driver lineup.

The R26 Concept is a strong visual opening act for what is arguably the most exciting new manufacturer entry in decades. We now await the debut of the actual race car, which is slated for its first track runs in early 2026.
