2026 Volvo EX90 Gets Faster Charging and New Features

Just one year into its lifecycle, the all-electric, three-row Volvo EX90 is already receiving a massive injection of technology that fundamentally changes the ownership experience. For the 2026 model year, Volvo is rolling out sweeping hardware and software upgrades, effectively future-proofing its flagship SUV and addressing a major pain point for EV buyers: charging time.

The message is clear: the EX90 is not just keeping pace with the luxury EV segment—it’s now setting a new, electrifying benchmark.

The Big Leap: 800-Volt Architecture Arrives

The most significant upgrade for the 2026 EX90 is the transition from a standard 400-volt electric system to a cutting-edge 800-volt architecture.

Why does this voltage jump matter? It’s all about speed.

  • Faster Charging Times: The 800-volt system enables the EX90 to harness the full power of high-output DC fast chargers (up to an estimated 350 kW peak). Volvo claims the 2026 model can now add up to 155 miles (250 km) of range in just 10 minutes under ideal conditions—a significant improvement over the outgoing model.
  • Reduced Charging Stop: While the previous model took around 30 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%, the new 800V system and optimized battery management software are expected to slash this time to approximately 22 minutes. Less time plugged in means more time on the road.
  • Performance Boost: The high-voltage system also contributes to improved efficiency, slightly lower vehicle weight (due to thinner wiring), and even promises a minor bump in acceleration, ensuring the EX90 remains brisk for a three-row SUV.

Smarter, Safer, and More Luxurious Features

Beyond the charging bay, Volvo has significantly enhanced the onboard intelligence and luxury features, reinforcing its commitment to safety and Scandinavian comfort.

1. Next-Gen Computing Power

The brain of the EX90 has received an impressive boost. The SUV now features a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin-based core computer delivering a staggering 500 TOPS (Trillion Operations Per Second) of computing power. This enhanced processing power is critical for enabling the next generation of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and AI-driven features.

2. Enhanced Safety and Driver-Support Systems

The new computing platform translates directly into new or improved safety features:

  • Connected Safety Alerts: The EX90 can now communicate with other Volvo vehicles to provide real-time alerts about slippery road conditions, unexpected road hazards, and accidents ahead.
  • Emergency Stop Assist (ESA): This crucial feature automatically and safely pulls the vehicle to a controlled stop in its lane if the driver becomes unresponsive, automatically activating an e-call to emergency services.
  • Improved Pilot Assist: Automated emergency steering and other driver-support functions now perform even better in low-light and complex situations.

3. Luxury Gets Brighter (and Darker)

The 2026 EX90 also gets an exclusive luxury touch: the Electrochromic Panoramic Roof. Borrowed from the upcoming ES90 sedan, this feature allows occupants to instantly adjust the roof’s transparency at the touch of a button, letting in the light or dimming the cabin for privacy and glare reduction.

Good News for Early Adopters

Perhaps the most surprising—and customer-friendly—aspect of this update is Volvo’s commitment to its early adopters. While the 800V architecture is a non-retroactive hardware change, Volvo is generously offering 2025 EX90 owners a one-time, complimentary upgrade to the new, more powerful core computer. This ensures current owners can access the significant improvements in safety, driver support, and future software capabilities via over-the-air updates.

The 2026 Volvo EX90 is a statement that Volvo is playing to win in the luxury electric segment. By dramatically reducing charging times and layering in sophisticated, future-ready technology, the EX90 has secured its position as a compelling choice for families seeking a premium, fast-charging, and supremely safe electric SUV.
