The Return of an Icon: Ferrari's New 849 Testarossa Is a Hybrid Powerhouse

In a move that has both delighted and shocked the automotive world, Ferrari has officially unveiled its new flagship supercar, the Ferrari 849 Testarossa. The new car not only revives one of the most iconic names in the brand’s history but also propels it into a new era of performance with a cutting-edge plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The heart of the new Testarossa is a sophisticated plug-in hybrid system that delivers a staggering 1,036 horsepower. This immense power comes from a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine and a trio of electric motors. The V8, a refined version of Ferrari’s award-winning F154 engine, produces 819 horsepower on its own, while the electric motors contribute an additional 217 horsepower. This setup not only offers incredible acceleration—Ferrari claims a 0-62 mph time of just 2.25 seconds—but also allows for a short, electric-only driving range for quiet city cruising. The new car is a replacement for the SF90 Stradale, and it improves upon that car’s already impressive performance.

True to Ferrari’s philosophy, the 849 Testarossa is built for an exhilarating driving experience. The plug-in hybrid architecture is designed to enhance performance, with the electric motors providing instant torque and advanced torque vectoring for unparalleled agility. The car also features an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. The interior is a cockpit focused on the driver, with a slim passenger display and controls primarily located on the steering wheel, bucking the trend of large central touchscreens.

The new Ferrari 849 Testarossa is available in both Coupe and Spider (convertible) variants. While official U.S. pricing has not been announced, European prices suggest a starting point of around $540,000 for the coupe and $586,000 for the spider. For those who want an even more track-focused experience, the Assetto Fiorano package adds a host of carbon fiber elements, a stiffer suspension setup, and lightweight components. Deliveries are expected to begin in mid-2026 for the coupe and in the third quarter of 2026 for the spider.

With its blend of classic heritage, groundbreaking hybrid technology, and raw power, the new Ferrari 849 Testarossa is poised to become the next legendary nameplate in the supercar world. It’s a clear statement from Maranello that the future of high-performance cars is both electric and thrilling.
