Lucid Motors Unveils ‘Lunar,’ Its Vision for a Future Robotaxi

Lucid Motors unveiled a robotaxi concept called “Lunar” during its investor day in New York City. The futuristic two-seat vehicle has no steering wheel or pedals and is designed to use the same platform being developed for Lucid’s upcoming mid-size electric vehicle lineup.

According to interim CEO Marc Winterhoff, the Lunar could launch after the mid-size EVs, though the company clarified that active development on the dedicated robotaxi has not started yet.

Lucid also revealed it is close to a partnership with Uber to build a robotaxi based on one of its future mid-size vehicles. Meanwhile, the company is already collaborating with autonomous tech firm Nuro to create a self-driving version of the Lucid Gravity SUV, expected to launch on Uber’s network in the San Francisco area by the end of the year.

The announcements highlight Lucid’s growing focus on autonomy as a new revenue stream. Beyond robotaxis, the company plans to introduce monthly subscriptions for its DreamDrive Pro driver-assistance system starting in 2027, ranging from $69 to $199 per month depending on capability, including a future fully autonomous option. Lucid believes autonomy subscriptions could become its biggest software monetization opportunity, following strategies used by companies like Tesla and Rivian.

Lucid Motors revealed it is developing an in-cabin AI assistant, similar to efforts by Rivian. The assistant is designed to handle simple voice commands—like adjusting the air conditioning—as well as more complex requests, such as recommending unique activities or destinations. A live demonstration during the event failed, so the company instead showed a pre-recorded demo.

Much of the event also focused on Lucid’s efforts to reduce manufacturing costs and improve the efficiency of its electric drivetrain, key steps toward making its upcoming mid-size EV lineup more affordable, with prices expected to start around $50,000.

Lucid confirmed two upcoming models in this lineup: the Lucid Cosmos and the Lucid Earth, both expected to arrive beginning later this year, while the name of a third vehicle has not yet been revealed.
