OpenAI is teaming up with your friends (and coworkers) in a whole new way: you can now chat in groups with ChatGPT. Instead of a one-on-one conversation with the AI assistant, you can invite up to 20 people into a shared chat where ChatGPT participates, supports, and collaborates.
Whether you are planning a group trip, debugging code with colleagues, or settling a dinner debate, you can now bring AI directly into the discussion without the hassle of screenshots or copy-pasting.
How It Works
The feature is designed to feel like a standard messaging app but with a “smart” participant in the room.
- Capacity: You can add up to 20 users to a single thread.
- Smart Context: ChatGPT doesn’t just reply to every single message (which would be annoying). It uses new “social behaviors” to listen to the conversation context and only chimes in when it’s explicitly mentioned (e.g., @ChatGPT) or when it detects a clear request for help.
- Full Feature Access: The group has access to the full suite of ChatGPT tools, including web browsing, DALL-E 3 image generation, and data analysis.
How to Start a Group Chat
Getting started is simple and takes seconds:
- Open ChatGPT and start a new chat (or go to an existing one).
- Tap the “+” or “People” Icon located in the top navigation bar.
- Share the Invite Link: This generates a unique URL you can send to friends or colleagues via text, Slack, or email.
- Join & Collaborate: Once they click the link, they are added to the chat instantly.
The feature is rolling out now to all users on Free, Plus, Team, and Enterprise plans globally. If you don’t see the invite icon yet, ensure your app is updated to the latest version.
